Rod rap on cold start
Rod rap on cold start
I'm curious if anyone else hears rod rap for the first couple of seconds after starting when cold. Mine is a 04 Cooper S with about 3k miles. As soon as oil pressure comes up it goes silent and runs fine.
Anyone else?
Thanks,
Adrian

I have heard something too.
My MCS, stock, has about 7200 miles on it, with two oil and filter changes, last oil and filter change was about 300 miles ago, and I have heard a knock 2 or 3 times on morning starts within the last two weeks. I am not sure if it’s the rods, or crank but it is something large. The knock is very short in duration maybe once or twice and goes away but it is distinctive. I have never noticed the knock before these last two weeks but now I start the car without radio, or alarms signals going just to make sure I am hearing things correctly. Yesterday, and this morning I started the car without any unusual sounds and I hope it stays that way!
May be dependent on driving frequency
I should have mentioned that I do not drive my mini that frequently. So it may be that in a few days there is more oil drain down and more passages to fill before the pressure comes up.
