Bye bye to another midlands....

I think the throw out bearing on my midlands went. The car was making an odd noise when I pressed on the clutch and then the clutch just wouldn't function. I only have 30k miles on the trans and clutch kit, which is also odd to me, but I'd rather not pull the transmission ever again. Or at least as long as a clutch would normally last. So I'm hoping to get this in the car this week - I'll try to take as many pictures as I can but it's hard when my hands are dirty... The TSW paper is very detailed so I'm confident this should be fairly straight forward. Keep you guys posted though.

Just a little confused, you think the clutch went bad or the transmission itself went bad? If you need help with the transmission removal for either one of those, please review the link below.

I apologize. The title of the thread is a little mis guiding. The symptoms would say the TOB failed not the transmission. It was shifting and working perfectly. I, like many others, believe the midlands is just an under engineered unit. When factoring the man hours and the parts involved to complete the swap I can't justify not doing the swap. The "extra" parts are nominal. New starter, cv axles, slave cyl, etc. To me, the piece of mind is worth it. Plus I really want to take the car on a road trip this fall/winter.

Did you change the throw out bearing when you did the clutch 30k ago?

Good question. 99 of my personalities want to say "yes absolutely" but I honestly can't remember. I replaced the trans with a rebuilt one from John Tee and it came with a clutch kit so that's why I'm leaning towards yes.

In any event I have good news and questionable news. The good news is the car is running. The questionable news is that it still has the 5spd in it... The tob literally fell apart. Thankfully it didn't do anymore damage. There were markings on the old pressure plate and we had to refinish the guide the bearing sits on. It definitely feels different though. I'll try to post some more pictures tomorrow... I'm pretty confident this will last until I can piece everything else together for the swap if I still have the car.
