If you pull the oil pan off the tranny you will know if the belt is broken. I rebuilt a cvt in my first mini it was a 03.

Check these guys out. I bought my parts from them. http://www.europeantransmissions.com/ BMW doesn't want you to rebuild it they want you to buy a new one. Once you drop the pan or even drain the oil you should know for sure if the belts gone. Then you would need to decide find another trans, rebuild yours or part it out which is a pain.
