Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
So I've never really posted before so be gentle. I own a 2009 mini Cooper (not an S) that sucks oil (like most of them) and started making a horrible noise. I got it checked and they said there is a hole in the mesh-looking part of the exhaust assembly. Unfortunately that means I need a whole new assembly which is ~$1700 just for the parts. Is this worth it? It has 130k miles on it already. Let me know your thoughts and experience. Thanks!!

The mesh looking part, is that the flex pipe? Technically you could get an aftermarket flex pipe and have a muffler shop cut out and weld the new one in. I think we need more details about what exactly was quoted to be replaced, who diagnosed the issue/would be doing the work (dealer or indie shop?)

Yes, the mesh looking thingy is the flex pipe.
The parts quote is for the cart/muffler/resonator pipe (1 assembly) from the manifold on back.
Do you have any recommendations for a replacement flex pipe?
The forward end of my exhaust flex section is coming apart too. Looks like it's rusting off. I plan to take a good shop muffler. Heck, even AutoZonr carries those flex sections on the sales floor. Should be an easy fix for a muffler shop.

I don't have experience replacing a flex pipe but I bet any auto muffler shop would have some available. The flex pipe isn't unique to MINI design, all it is is a piece of pipe that can bend a little.
We got an easy solution and an upgrade. The Milltek for your car includes the entire exhaust after the manifold. So this will have the front section with the flex pipe, then the center section, and rear muffler. Plus give you a little more sound but not too much. Also can be installed in about 30min. https://www.waymotorworks.com/millte...per-non-s.html
sorry don't have a fancy pic, but I know for sure it includes all you need.
So basically, because the flexpipe is near the end of the assembly, no muffler shop will replace it since the engine needs some flex. GRRRRRRRRR I've taken it to 3 different shops now.
Not my picture, but the flex part is at the very end ...
I replaced mine with a $15 flex pipe assembly off eBay. The piece I got was 2.25" ID and 10" overall length*. The ends of the flex assembly needed some trimming and I was able to salvage the original v band flange.
I'll consider it a temporary solution. Not sure how long my flux core booger welds will hold, but if I get a year out of it I'll be happy Really just need it back in service until I can find a used one on Craigslist
*I used part number 22506DN from seller "Bear River Converters" on eBay
Heard funny noises now that warmer weather has me driving w/windows rolled down. MINI dealer suggests ~ $2,000 to 'replace parts' (presumably entire exhaust system from Flexpipe on back?) to cure what can be done for $2-300 @ local muffler shop. Stopped at Midas, techs suggested nothing wrong, invited me to look for myself while my Clubman's up on lift. Couldn't detect actual leak though outer springwire sheath is detached at front end.
I think I'll just monitor situation while looking for suitable replacement part here.
