Replaced Thermostat, P0597 Remains, Next Steps
I replaced my thermostat after my car threw a P0597 code, but the P0597 code still remains. As I see it, there are two possibilities as to why the code remains: the replacement part is bad or I've got a break in the wiring. In order to figure out which, I'm wondering if anyone can answer what the resistance of the thermostat is supposed to be and where on the connector into the computer the thermostat is placed? Any other suggestions on how to proceed would be much appreciated.

1. Did you mix up the PCV heater connection and the thermostat temp sensor connection? It can be done, and will cause weird problems with coolant temp and thermostat codes. The thermostat temp connector on the harness is green, the PCV heater is brown.
2. The part could be faulty, we had one last week that we had to warranty out after about a week of being installed.
3. Is the car an automatic? The thermostat codes could be stored in the transmission control module and need to be cleared.

Thanks for the reply! I didn't mix up the wires: brown connector to the temp sensor, green to the thermostat. The thermostat could be faulty, which is why I was asking about the resistance. I measured 16Ω on the new thermostat and 530Ω on the old thermostat. I don't want to blindly replace the thermostat again without someway of verifying that the new one is broken. Since the thermostat is a solenoid, I know of no better way to check if it's okay or not than to check the resistance. My car is a manual so I don't think the issue is with the code being in the transmission control module.

Okay, well if you bought a MINI part they carry a 2 year unlimited mile warranty. If it is in fact faulty the dealer will replace it for free (after you pay the diagnostic up front).
Many aftermarket parts also carry a 1 year warranty, but they don't warranty labor and coolant to do the job.
