Auto Trans shift lock

It happened a few days ago when I noticed that my shift lock on the automatic transmission does not work. I can shift in and out of any gear from park without pressing on the shift lock release. It feels like the spring is not there. Is this a common problem with the R56 auto transmission Mini's? Tried to search but found nothing on this issue. Thanks. Jon

Not sure if it's common, but you should still need to step on the brake to get out of park and make certain other shifts. Does yours still lock in certain positions if the brake pedal isn't pressed?

Nope I don't need to step in the brake to get it out of park.

Yea, should be shift lock controlled. You have a issue with the shifter base , do you hear a clicking noise very lightly when you press the brake . I would get that checked out asap, you don't want it to come out of park by accident.

Sounds like the lock on the shifter is broken or stuck. I replaced the shift **** on my auto with a MOMO for a manual. Even though it doesn't have a button for the lockout, I still need to press the brake to get in and out of park, and go back to reverse from drive. No brake is needed to go from reverse to drive, though.

well now it works again. I need to step on the brake pedal to get out of park but I do not need to press the "button" on the shift lever to go from D to any other gear including P. I think it is supposed to work that when you are in D you can't shift straight to R unless you press the button to eliminate transmission damage while moving right?

Is there supposed to be a clicking noise coming from the shifter area when you press the brake? I noticed that my wife's '12 MCS just started making this noise recently. I had never noticed it before.

Yes, that's the solenoid unlocking the shifter which is activiated by brake pedal. MINI wants to make sure you are stepping on the brake before you put it in gear.

Figured that was the case. It's interesting that I just started hearing the click about a month ago. Also, you can feel that something is happening if you put your hand on the shifter when you press the brake pedal. We've had the car for 4+ years. Everything works as it should. Weird.

(R56 Auto)

I just noticed that my auto shifter button is basically fully depressed and no longer has any travel and I can freely move the shifter back and forth.

The break lock does work so that's functional, need to press the break to get out of park.

Is this the correct part to replace? The top **** and steam?

Some threads say you just pull it out with a lot of force, is this correct?

Yes to just pulling it off, and watch out for broken sunroofs or hitting yourself in the face, seriously.

Yikes, that much force...?!

Is there anything to fix that button or does it just need to be replaced?
