Engine Rattle 1st Gen R53
Can you describe the process needed to "pop" it?
We usually leave the valve cover off until the timing cassette and cover are totally finished, but you will go in from the top with a pry bar and find a fulcrum point and pry against the chain setting on the tensioner, it doesn't take much to pop the tensioner, so don't try to kill it.
You'll be able to see more of the tensioner exposed when it pops and the chain won't have slack in it anymore.

Thanks!
How about if you're just installing a new tensioner, and not replacing the rest of the system? Will the new tensioner just pop as normal once the oil pressure is correct? Or does it have to be installed & set up correctly first?

Can you possibly distinguish where it's coming from in the engine bay? I'd maybe check the belt tensioner, as said above.
