Anyone had the "Transmission Malfunction" message?

We have a 2012 MCS with auto transmission/paddle shifters with just under 30k miles that has never given us any problem until today when my wife started to leave for work. Upon starting the car this message came up. You can get the car into reverse (with a thud) and it will move backward, but it will not allow you to put it in drive. We had to push it back into the garage. Once it's in neutral you can not move the stick out of neutral until you cut off the motor. Then you can put it into park. Has anyone had this problem? Hoping to get some insight as to what might be causing this before we have it towed to the dealer. Thanks in advance for any help. I did a search in several forums here but could not find anything along the lines of this specific problem. I apologize if this has been covered before and I just missed it. I attached pictures to illustrate the message.

Had something similar happen to me, but it went away. The problem happens either if you have a loose bowden cable in the engine bay and the position of the lever does not match the position of the selector in the engine or if you accidentally leave the selector in-between Park and Reverse. It registers a fault, but if put the lever back into position and restart the engine the warning should go away.

PS: There is a service bulletin for the first cause in the database, but don't remember the number now.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the problem still existed when I got home from work to check it out. Really weird that it can be working fine one day and then wham!! I'm just thankful that the problem occurred at the house on the way to work and didn't wait until the drive home. I do not have a code reader so I don't know what code it might be showing. I'm kind of at the dealer's mercy in this respect.

The TSB is SI M24 01 08.

It is hard to tell without a code reader. Some errors you need to delete from memory with a code reader before everything is normal again. That's even if the fault is not present anymore.

Could this be the problem we've seen with the electronics at the base of the shifter? Spills (or maybe even condensation?) in the cupholders can wind up down on those bits, causing shifting trouble. I don't know how a DIY can deal with it, though.

Bought a Blue Driver scan tool. It is showing two confirmed codes: U110F & U111A. Of course there was no description or possible fixes for these particular codes, which I figured. Also they are showing up as permanent which it says it cannot clear. When something goes wrong with one of our vehicles, it is not usually a simple fix. Oh well.

Here's what I've found so far online:

U110F - PT CAN. message (EGS torque request, 0xB5): omitted
U111A - PT CAN. message (transmissiondata, 0xBA): Missing

Turns out the cable to the transmission control unit was broken, ~$230 to repair.

"REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT CONNECTOR. (THE CONNECTOR FOR THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT IS BROKEN AND WAS DISCONNECTED.)"

Hope this helps someone that might encounter this problem later.

I too have the lighter color Gear Warning icon, about once a week, as I shut it down. I do have some rough downshifting occasionally. Nothing else.
I worry if something expensive is brewing..
Anyone know what might portend?
It's an 08 with 90k miles, paddle shifters. It's had a few partial drain-and-fills done with Toyota Type 4 ATF.
