Oil Leak by Steering Fan (w/pics)

Hello, folks.

I got in there to change the oil in my 2003 R53 today. I've noticed it's been going through more oil (not a ton more, but more) than it has in the past, and since it has 71,000 miles now I thought it might not be a huge deal.

As I wriggled underneath to place the oil drain pan I saw that a bunch of stuff was covered in a film of oil (or similar, but it is quite thick and the same color as used motor oil), and subsequently, road grime (I live in a rural area, and keeping the underside clean is a pipe dream).

It looks roughly like the oil is leaking from the pipe (maybe the attachment) shown in the pictures below.

So I know some of the drill - before I'm done I'll clean that area really well and take another round of pictures, and check on it in a while.

In the meantime, though, does anybody have a good guess as to what that leak is and why it's happening? The first picture is a closer look, the second picture is straight up towards the hood (bonnet, I know) and the last picture gives a little more context about where, exactly, this is happening.

I might suggest it MIGHT be getting blown back...or even dripped from a messy filter change, or possibly an oil filter housing gasket...
Clean it up...and check again after a few miles...
I WOULD also check the PS fluid level...same area, and oily too.

PS fluid looks full, but filthy. That is also a good thought, I didn't think about that.

I'm willing to bet it's the return line on the power steering reservoir leaking. The factory crimp style clamps are garbage and will loose clamp over time, causing that leak. There is also a crimp where the line goes from rubber to steel we have seen leak a handful of times, but that is far less common than the clamps coming loose.

If you haven't replaced the upper clamps with a worm style clamp, go to an auto parts store and pick up some #10 clamps, and replace the factory crimp styles with the worm clamps, should solve the issue.

But worst case scenario, if you do need the return line we do have them in stock, as well as Royal Purple PS fluid.

Return Line

Royal Purple Max EZ
