Year and a Half old Key Purchased From Mini Dealer Broke

Hey guys!

I purchased a newly cut key and fob from Herb Chambers MINI of Boston about a year and a half ago. Was a bit of a headache, but I chronicled it here.

The tip of the key just broke. As far as I can tell, it is the very tip, but it will not even go in the ignition. This is the only fob key we have (when we bought the car, the seller only had the spare key) so we are back to manually opening the car (yeah, we could put both keys on the keyring but even a single one of these suckers is bulky as heck!)

Anway, does anyone know if there is any sort of warranty? And if not, could I just get the key laser cut and then replace the shaft part myself? I really don't want to have to by another keybod key. I got away with a steal of a deal (see thread link if interested) when I bought this one apparently, but am not looking forward to shelling out $300+ for another...

There is usually a 2 year warranty for almost anything purchased from a dealer.

The shafts are pretty common...
The $5 eBay mini keys (that don't work, no ews chip) could be used as a donor if you switch the guts or the shaft....
Yes..they can be cut...machine looks like a little metal lathe or more precisely like a router used in cabinetry...so key guys (I say this, not shops, the guys who have vans as key professionals) can cut them....
But first try to get a free warranty replacement....
Then if they say no...
I'd price one out at mini of pebody/Bedford NH...different corporate parent...better to deal with IMO....then make the decision to chance the homemade or get a new one...
