Overheated in traffic
A, overheated for a bit in traffic. Cool day out too.
The fan has been running after shutdowns for the past few weeks. So something is crapping out.
I hear the high speed at least, but was wondering if I was supposed to get a code if the thermostat went out, otherwise I'm thinking water pump?
Or maybe the fan is dying, but it was able to blast heat thru the AC vents, and bring the temp right back down. Thought I heard the high speed kick in too after the overheat.
It shot right up too man, from normal to blinking red in like 10 seconds or less.

You ever check the coolant level....
Was suggested a couple weeks ago if I recall right....
The answer to if it overheated with full coolant vs was low is very different solution wise....

lol. it is love hate with the mini, but mostly love i think
checked coolant this morning. ya, none there.
went to mini, had a tech buddy help me out; put more in, bled a little a the plastic screw at the radiator: mostly Water came out, nearly clear, slight yellow color. did not smell like anti-freeze. very odd.
managed to get some air out and add enough coolant to get me around for a bit.
ill do a flush obviously; odd they didnt see that during my last oil change shortly ago (supposing they actually did their whatever point inspection with the oil change).
that dummy temp gauge is junk of course; def need to get my torq app going on my old phone again.

Sounds like you need to fix your leak....hopefully the headgasket is OK...sounds like you shut it down fast.
Look at the usual locations....
Expansion tank, thermostat and the radiator.... But while at it look for any crusty resudue around any hoses or the oil cooler....heck in about 20 minutes of looking you should have a good idea what is up...any car will overheat when very low on coolant....heck...you were likely low by a most a half gallon if I had to guess....so once you were not driving....it did not have much time to cool off in the radiator.....and you were boiling it...hopefully the pump never ran dry...

To bleed it....
You really need to have the cap open...idle elevated a bit, and then open the TWO BLEED VALVES....one is by the radiator hose...the other Is by the thermostat....
When the thermostat opens, water will start to squirt out once most of the air is out...so keeping the tank full is important....
If partially bleed, the car will overheat again....usually after 15 minutes or when the car is pushed a bit...can't really just use one.....
Since it appears the car has had a leak for sometime, and it had been refilled with water, it sounds like a full flush and fill should be done....remember, the BLOCK IS IRON...so plain water for coolant or old coolant allows corrosion to become an issue....the rust flakes off....and settles in the heater core....and I can only iminigine the damage caused to the water pump overtime....

we looked at the engine for a bit, the tank is def not leaking, and the head gasket also looks fine. will have to go under the car and check some more as well.
obviously the fan kicking on after a shutdown is related to the fact there was little to no anti-freeze in the system. hoping a proper flush and re-fill will solve that issue as well!
