I just completed the install of my rebuilt power steering pump. Also installed a new spal cooling fan. The install is a bit of a pain but not too bad. I did the $225 rebuild on Ebay. Also got the spal fan on ebay for $92. The pump has a slight whine but from what I've read this is normal. Huge improvement over the racket it was making. I also replaced all the fasteners with stainless steel - I was surprised by the amount of rust on the various nuts and bolts so figured I'd clean things up while I was doing it.

My question...

I've been researching the forum to find out how to insure the fan is coming on properly. I've read a number of posts, some saying it will come on with the AC some saying it won't. In my case it does not come on with the AC. Is there a definitive answer on when the fan will come on? Just trying to make sure it's functioning properly. The old fan was completely frozen. I did check the fuse under the hood and all looks fine.

Any thoughts are very appreciated.

What year car....
The cars with the 2005+ model year wiring update (no ps fan plug comming off the fan) had a new fuse added in the cabin fuse box...a 5 amp one...this update was done to many older cars...heck...the instructions on how to do the change came in the spal fan box when I got one from waymotorworks....
Seems to be a couple of variations, likely due to wiring differences, on when the fan runs...let's face it...mini's are largely DIFFENT based on production date...hard to SAY ANYTHING about all gen1 cars...there were so many changes.

 

Start the car, turn the wheel back and forth until the fan comes on....if you have the Bavarian Tek software you can turn the fan on yourself in test mode.

 

+1 what year do you have. I know 05+ kick on with the fan, why, I hear mine all the time with the a/c on.

Check for a burnt out 5amp fuse in the car...on the 2005+ production year cars, the PS fan gets the power from a fuse INSIDE the car....forget which #, but 2 minutes with a voltmeter will find it!! Or you can yank them one at a time and look....but since the old fan was siezed...bet it blew the fuse.

Thanks ZippyNH, you were spot on. It was the 5 amp fuse that was blown. Replaced it, moved the steering wheel back and forth, fan on. Perfect.
