R50 Xenon H/Lamp Repair

Hi Folks
I had the igniter on my headlamp fail (over time - just hit and miss at first).
The 'igniter' listed by Pelican is in fact the connector to the tube base only.
I bought a front damaged unit from a wrecker and tested it with my control unit (the silver box on the underside) and my tube. It worked - no problems.

Then I had to find the igniter. It is inside the unit and I was told there is no official repair - replace only - with the whole headlight unit.

So using a heated broken hacksaw blade I cut open the damaged unit until I could get the unit out. It is secured by two screws. Then you have to cut the high voltage wires as the unit is trapped by the refelector. The unit itself is resin filled and not repairable.

Using the damaged unit as a guide I cut the smallest practical hole in the undamaged unit and removed the defective igniter. I cut the 'H/T' wires to stagger the joints as far as possible and extend them about an inch.

I then soldered them up (observing polarity just in case) and double shrink wrapped each joint. Tested again at this point - working.

To refit the removed part I used Stika- Flex in two stages - one to secure the cut part and when that set a second application to reseal the unit.
Test again prior to refit - all OK.

Now both headlamps work every time and I saved over $400.

Hope this helps someone else.
