Cold Start with A/C off car sounds like it will stall

Hi,

I'm a new Mini owner with a used 2011 R56S. I started it this morning with the A/C off and this is what happened.

It only happens when the A/C is off when I start the car. When I have the A/C running, it idles normally. Can anybody tell me what could possibly be wrong? There is no CEL.

Thanks.

The first thing I would check for a vacuum leak. Vacuum hose loose or cracked. The idle speed is faster with the AC on and may mask the effect of a leak.
There is many other issues that can cause the engine to idle roughly but this is one of the most common issues and easy to fix usually.

My 2cents

Thanks Grumpy. I let the engine run without the A/C again this morning and I could hear hissing from the cold side tube near the intake. I checked for loose connections but found that they were all tight. Looks like I may just end up taking it to the dealer since the car is still under warranty.

Just a thought....ever get a carbon cleaning?
Starting the car without the AC running lowers the load...meaning less fuel is needed...
If the valves are covered in carbon...it means it is running richer..due to less load..hense the funny sound...

Nope. Never had the carbon cleaning done. Is that something MINI would cover under warranty since the car has less than 40k miles?

Sorry did not see you could hear a hissing....
Sounds like a vacume leak....
Bet if the hissing gets fixed, issues will go away...issue will likely worsen over time...
Generally the n18 is much more carbon resistant than old ones...so carbon issues are not as common.....so was a reach...but possible...

I got a CEL with an p0599 error "Thermostat Heater Control Circuit High", which went away on it's own after a week. Unfortunately, the only available appointment with the mini dealer is on Aug 27.

Can anyone give me some advice? I was hoping to have this CEL when I took it in, but now that it's gone I'm sure the dealer won't bother to check the Thermostat.
