2002 key replacement

I went to get a replacement key at Denver's dealer; they want $180!!!
They said that could fax them my title, paypal the cash, and they'd send me a key (I'm in South Dakota).
I'll bet other dealers would do the same. Then I could just get the fob parts programmed the next time I drive to Denver (for ANOTHER $30!)
So... where's the cheapest dealer to get a new key? I want a regular key, AND a key fob.
Thanks!
C

There is no cheap solution. A bit of advice don’t go buying keys off eBay thinking you’re saving money. In the end you’ll end up with a key that turns the ignition and opens the door, but never will start the car because of the EWS.

I just spend a **** load of money on keys also. I’m here in North Dakota

Use the search engine, do a little research and find out exactly what the requirements are to replace the key. They ain't cheap and consider the hoops you have to jump thru to get one. Without those safe guards (hoops) any idiot could read the VIN thru the windshield and have a key in a few days and drive off with your baby.

Be thankful your not Australia, I've been quoted Aus$280.00 for a standard key, I need to provide proof of registration and pay upfront as the new key comes from Germany.

I didn't bother to ask for a remote key. With remote keys, you may need to check what Freq your key is supposed to work on, this can be found on your car info at RealOEM.com with the Vin number.

If you choose to Buy a key from Ebay, you will need to ensure its the correct Freq for your car, also you will need to know the hex code of the immobiliser chip to program that into your vehicles computer or, take the immobiliser chip from your spare key and swap them over once you have the new blade cut.

So, to buy a key on Ebay, Work out if its the correct Freq, Be able to add the immobiliser chip to the Computer, have the blade cut at a locksmith, then program the key to your vehicle is a headache.

In the end, its far easier to cough up the cash and get it from BMW, Your vehicle, vehicle Freq and Immobiliser chip are on record so they will send you the correct key from the start. All you need to do then is to program/synch it to your car.

The dealer will need a copy of the title or current registration and a copy of the drivers license for the registered owner. They take one to two days to get from BMW. The $180 sounds about right. If your not picking it up at the dealer they can send you the programming instructions, it takes 15 seconds to program the key to your car. Get the key from the MINI dealer and get the right and working key the first time.

How bad off is your current key? Knackered remote keys can be fixed:

There is a posted link to a google site at the top of page 2 of this thread that has a wealth of information about the keys for the early models.

If you need help with your key please let me know.
