Benchtest power steering pump R53?

Hi

I bought a new oem power steering pump for my R53. My mechanic is telling me the pump is not working. He is not a Mini specialist but he is an experienced mechanic. He tested the continuity on the pump big connector with the multimeter, but it wouldn't ring. He then tried to make the pump run for a very short time by plugging a car battery directly to the pump connector. One day it wouldn't work but on the next morning it would. So I wanted to know if there is a way to bench test the pump without having to install it on the car?

Thanks

The pump has a electronic controller....so cannot be tested as JUST A ELECTRIC MOTOR...
it is not just ON/OFF...
it has a HI and LOW demand mode....so not sure how you are going to trick it....
if it is a NEW OEM pump...WHY assume it is bad and test it?!

Ok thanks.

Because the connector was a little bit damaged when the previous pump died. So mechanic wanted to make sure the pump would be working before installing properly on the car. So he plugged the pump and puts the car on the on position without the engine running. Pump did not work so thats where he started the previous test I wrote earlier here. The pump is from the Mini dealer but I bought from someone. So he could have ripped me off, but maybe mechanic diagnostic wasnt right..

The pump will ONLY RUN with the alternator putting out voltage....so the engine must be running for it to turn on....it has a "sense" wire...that is why the pump stops if the alternator fails...
