clutch/flywheel changing

Hello, I've posted once before and I think I am posting in the right section, if not someone move this post to the 1st gen. I have a 2007 Cooper S turbo, that's 2nd gen right? Anyway I've posted before about a clutch problem and well tax time is here so I'll soon have money to get it fixed. I have the clutch kit already from LUK but I still need to get the flywheel, several out there at ranging prices but I think I have found a good one for a good price, if anyone knows where I can get one without spending 650+ please let me know as the listings on some of the cheaper ones are vague and not sure if they are for my mini or not.

Well I'll get to the main reason I'm posting this time, I need to know what tools I'll need for this clutch and flywheel replacement. I have a mechanic friend who is going to do it and he's been looking up info since christmas time so I just need to help him figure out what exactly are the supposedly 3 specialized tools are that all his research says he needs and where we might be able to find them to rent or buy. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what specialized tools you're referring to because there aren't really any. If he works on other german cars he'll be just fine. You'll need e-torx sockets and torx bits and some long extensions with swivels. That's really about it. The clutch set should come with a clutch alignment tool.

yeah got the alignment tool, and he has worked on many different types of cars, imports and domestics to the US but I have no idea if he has any torx sockets or bits so I'll ask him. Thanks. I do know he needs a transmission jack which he says he can get, if all he needs to the torx sockets and bits then I think he can get his hands on them. I remember him telling me about some special tool thing to hold the flywheel in place while you get the clutch on or something like that idk. Thanks again, hopefully he can figure it out, would rather pay him 500 bucks to do it than pay the dealership 1500 in labor alone.

Dealership will charge you around 3,600 with the flywheel, you could hold the flywheel like in the pic below. He can improvise Pelican parts has great articles

The special tool to hold the flywheel from rotating while placing the bolts in and the alignment tool while placing the clutch and the pressure plate are two different things and you already have one so you could fabricate the FW tool with scrap metal.

Transmission jack is a plus I dint use one, did it with 2 floor jacks one for the engine one for the tranny what a pain lol, if I had to do it again I would use a tranny jack plus this

It will make it less painful. Be warned it's a big job, it's not you not difficult just the amount of stuff that has to come out due to the lack of space

So I've only pulled the transmission on two different r56s. To be honest I only had a trans jack the second time and while it was handy for lowering the trans when it came time to put it all back together it was way easier to just put a loop of rope through the eye on the trans and have a friend support it from above while you wiggle the trans on/off. So if you have a friend and a decently long 2x4 I think its easier to do it without the trans jack. Or an engine hoist would work well too. Just something to support the trans from the top.

When using a non-OEM flywheel, ensure it has the 90 degree timing alignment hole. This is used for cam timing and will be necessary if the chain tensioner has not yet been replaced, or if you ever do any lower end engine upgrades.

And, if you plan to scrap the original flywheel, let me know via PM --- I might have a need for one, regardless of condition.
