Vacuum OBDII Questions N14 vs N18

We have two Mini's. A R57 and R60. Last night our R57 yellow check engine light came on. When we turned the car off then restarted, the light went off. I used my OBDII reader and did not see any codes. I was looking at the gauges and noticed the vacuum reading at idle was around -10 psi. This was on the R57's N14 engine. I decided to see what the Countrymans N18 readings were and they were only -0.9 psi at idle.

I have not seen any more lights come on. Are these readings normal for the engine types?

Thanks!

Not sure of the exact numbers that you are getting but the N18 will have less vacuum @ thanks to the variable cam lift (VALVETRONIC). Never the less I would still keep an eye on the R57, the CEL doesn't come on for no reason and those generic OBD scan tools can't always translate factory codes. Let us know if you are able to retrieve anything and if you have a loss of power at all.

Happy Motoring,

Thanks for the input. I just called the dealer and We are going to watch it today. I or when it comes back it will be going in. It seems like all of this started when we took it in for leaking coolant. They replaced the water pump. After that we started to get a single ping sound on hard acceleration with a quick stutter. No this? Strange......

To be hones it seems like it has a little less boost. Dont get me wrong it still has some good pull but it just seems a little less since we had work done. This R57 has a JCW tuning kit on it and it almost feels like it did before the tune. I asked if they could have reset the programming and was told no?

Thanks

I've noticed the difference in pressure. I have a N14 JCW and an N18 GPII.

The N14 runs significantly negative manifold pressure when idling or when running at light load. Often as low as -10psi.

The N18 GP sits just below atmospheric at idle or light loads. Usually around -0.5, but when lifting off sometimes as much as -2, but never more.

So that is normal for the N14 and N18 engines AFAIK.

With regards to the code you should get it read by someone with a proper code reader. If the check engine light has been on there will be a code logged, just your reader does not recognise it.
