Growling A/C Compressor
Sounds like it is a "feature" of the car and if you take it to the dealer they will replace the compressor and the same thing will happen.
My solution (which has been in development over FIVE MINUTES!!) - Turn up the radio, open the window, turn the A/C off, drive faster.

And if you are stuck in traffic, just leave the windows closed and crank your radio even louder!

Finally!
Umm... actually in my case there was something wrong.
The dealership couldn't figure out why my A/C compressor makes an obnoxious whining noise. Two days after I got my car back from them (after they had it for a week) my A/C stopped working. Just in time for the 4th of July weekend... sweet... NOT!
Brought it to an independent mechanic and he said the pressure in my A/C compressor is way too high and my engine cooling fan (low speed fan) isn't working. He put a new fan in and also adjusted the freon level (the dealer put in way too much freon - apparently their solution for a not so well cooling A/C) and no more whining noise. I hope it stays that way.

I apologizse for the sarcastic response then :-X
It sounds like the symptom you had that was different from the rest of us was that the A/C wasn't working very well so the dealer put in lots of freon. So note to all - if the A/C is working well then everything is okay, if the A/C is not working so well then there may be a problem.
Couple of questions for you - did you notice the noise in the loaner that you had from the dealership? was if louder/quieter/different from the one you heard in your own car?
Also - when did you notice that the A/C was not cooling as it should and what did you do (sounds like you went to the dealer)? Is that when the noises started?
I'm glad you're back motoring and looking cool (pun intended) with the rest of us. My fist task this weekend will be to get my freon level checked so it doesn't bust anything!

No need to apologize... wish it would have just been a feature of the car, would have saved me a lot of trouble... LOL.
Well, the loaner was a 2010 MCS, so a bit different from my 2004 MCS. The main difference w.r.t. A/C probably was how cold the A/C was (set to the same temp). I can't say I heard any unusual noise. I heard some whining being already a bit paranoid, but it was nowhere near as obnoxious as to what I heard in my car. So I guess that was quite normal.
I am not sure now when I noticed that the A/C wasn't cooling too well in my car, but I think it was around the same time I had all these "other" issues.
It started out as a visit to the dealer to have the power steering hoses changed, as I was leaving the lot I heard some weird whining and then something that sounded like a fan spinning out of control then getting stuck. Next thing I knew my engine overheated.
Back at the dealer they couldn't find anything wrong. But after that I kept hearing the high-speed fan kicking in ever so often. Engine never overheated as per the temp gauge, but the high speed fan kept switching on and off.
Then after two weeks I started hearing the high-pitched whining noise which seemed to be related to the A/C compressor. Again the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. Oh, at first they said it's the harmonic balancer and changed that, didn't solve the problem though. Then they had the car for a week. They changed the tensioner and V-belt and topped off the freon and gave the car back to me. Can't say the A/C was cooling much better, the whining was still there and then two days later it stopped working.
Actually the reason why it stopped working was a loose connection. When the dealer played around with it they must have loosened a plug (?) and not connected it properly and as I was driving along it came loose. Luckily, cause otherwise I probably would still be driving around with a broken engine cooling fan and an A/C compressor under too much pressure. Who knows what that could have done to my car?
All I have now is a weird occasional thud - I posted a question about that in a new thread - I really hope that's nothing and just one of the quirks of the car.

I wanted to add my experiences to this thread and see if anyone else has had similar issues.
My 06 MC convertible with 40k miles has developed a whine at exactly 3000 rpm that is seemly coming from the A/C compressor. The rather loud whine can be immediately silenced by turing off the A/C and it only occurs between 2950 and 3100 rpm. When the revs are either higher or lower, you can hear and feel the added load of the A/C, but it is not abnormally loud. But at exactly 3000 rpm there is a loud whine that sounds like the sound your transmission makes when you are driving in reverse.
If I drive with the A/C off for a little while and then turn it on again, the whine will take a bit of time to reoccur, but eventually it alway does.
A/C performance seems fine and it blows as cold as when I bought the car new 4 years ago.
To me it seems like the bearing of the A/C compressor needs lubrication but I don't know if it is something that even can be lubricated.

I'll try to describe mine as best I can. I'll get an audio clip later. I should really save this post for later when it's not 4:45 AM and I feel like a crap sandwich.
I noticed ( so far) at low speeds, and parked there is a knocking sound when my AC is on. If I rev the engine up I think it goes away, or the exhaust note is louder than the knocking.
I know that is almost no information, but this group has a lot of smart people so someone may know what's up with that little bit. In the morning I'll get some more info.
