Entire Sunroof Replacement?

I've got an '07 MCS which started doing the warm weather 'force stop close' as soon as the weather got nice out (how typical...). Pushing up on the back portion of the glass worked for a while.

I went to open it the other week and it only vented about a 1/4" before it just stalled. Wouldn't open up at all anymore. Had it in to the dealership on Friday and they cleaned the rails, lubricated everything, etc. and said it took 3 people to get the roof closed again. Said I need to replace the whole roof, that the entire thing is seized up, and that the prior owner probably rarely ever opened the roof up.

Even the parts guy said he hasn't seen many requests for a full roof replacement. My car has 59,000kms and has been immaculately cared for. Anyone have any recommendations or ideas as I certainly don't have the money or desire to replace the whole sunroof. Like I mentioned, it was still opening and closing 2 weeks ago, though admittedly was slow in doing so.

The roof has never leaked or had any noise issues. I have a hard time believing it would need new seals, or new glass.....

Curious how many here have replaced the whole roof, or if others have had similar 'seized up' issues that have been fixed?

super common. the gear drive only comes as a complete cassette assembly. glass doesn't need replacement. the gear drive ends up stripping out and the motor stops moving the glass.

Mine was just done under warranty. Less than 30,000 miles and only 4 years old. Poor design. My SA told not to leave it vented. Excuse me?! That's what it's for!

Thanks for the reply. They didn't mention the gear drive being part of the cassette so makes more sense now.

My aftermarket warranty will only cover the motor replacement and labour for that, won't touch anything else to do with the sunroof.... over $1600 for the cassette and 6 hours labour. I only got to open it a few times

I'd argue that the motor is integrated into the cassette and therefore the only way to replace the motor, which they already admitted to covering, is to replace the whole cassette.

You could see if they will envoke the "good will repair. "

I was at the dealership when they made the call to the warranty company. They will cover the motor, but when asked what if the motor and cassette are part of one assembly, they stated that they'd not cover any of it were that the case. Motor only, or nothing.... (and that's First Canadian Protection Plan btw...). Nice thought though and the dealership did try that for me.

Anyone have advice on DIY repair of the sunroof? I have the clicking noise in the sunroof along with one side jammed. Appears that the "gears" on the one side are stripped. I removed the front glass so I have confirmed that the one side still works. Its the driver's side. I am handy enough to attempt a disassemble to see if I can determine what is wrong. Need some instruction.
