Oil filter
Oil filter
Going to chance oil on our 2007 Cooper so stopped by NAPA to get a filter. They asked what engine code I had, where do I find the engine code? Can't find any plate with that info in the engine bay. Any other tips I should be aware of?
Thanks
Thanks
Sounds like Napa don't know ****. Incase tell them which engine non turbo or turbo and plate may be under hood labels. If they don't know then they don't carry it. I would try auto zone if u have one.
I have a 03 cooper and I know my engine code is a w10 and the w11 for the s supercharged model. Not sure on the 07 models. Sorry but good luck.
Update:
If u have a non turbo should be the N12 and N14 for turbo

short version:
1. Find a better auto part store
2. If you search here you'll find many discussions of what filter to use and NOT use.
3. Some very trusted folks who frequently post here (and/or run businesses) say "use the OE filter" .... I for one have stuck with that since I bought my 02S off the lot in 02 and have never had a problem. Some 'other' filters have been found to have collapsed or the o-ring leaked and and and
4. I 'support' some other owners and they have brought MANN filters when they came to do an oil change. The filter is not an exact match to the OE filter, but I've never seen anyone have a problem with a MANN (also sold by a few of the 'particular' vendors)
I don't know what engine code they are asking for but do remember that for a 2007 the hardtop went to the GEN2 engine while the ragtop still has the GEN1 engine for a couple more years. The GEN1 and the GEN2 use different filters but all GEN1 filters are the same and all GEN2 filters are the same.
GEN1 left, GEN2 right (both are OE)

note that a GEN2 OE filter kit includes the o-ring for the canister AND the crush seal for the bung.... and you WANT to replace both.

Thanks to all for the replies. Nearest dealer is 300 plus miles, so may have to order one. It is a 07 convertible so must be the 1st generation. Surprised me when NAPA was stumped.
Thanks again
Thanks again
07 rag top is a GEN1
get filter kit from Way Motor Works or Mini Mania
order three or six at a time to take advantage of shipping costs. Buying one at a time and paying for shipping is dumb.
Get a cabin air filter too . . . .
if this is your first DIY oil change on a GEN1 you might want to read up on it ....
the bung is not 13mm, it is 1/2 inch
get a Fumoto valve and avoid problems in the future

you want the F-106 size

Very good, will do some reading (and look at the pictures as I don't read just for the articles). Will have to delay the oil change until supplies arrive. Always look forward everyone's input and incite.

FYI: Still wondering about that "engine code" they asked me for so I went to the NAPA website to investigate a little. I did find out that NAPA does sell the MANN filters.
They probably are just reading thru their computers application screen to get to the right one. The following are the engine codes for all current Mini Cooper's
2002-2006 R50 Cooper = W10 (w10b16) 1.6 Non Supercharged
2002-2006 R53 Cooper S = W11 (w11b16) 1.6 Supercharged
NOTE: 1st gen convertibles were made at the same time the 2nd gen Coupe was. Lots of people get confused when they have a 2007 or 2008 convertible and think its a 2nd gen.

2005-2008 R52 Cooper S Convertible = W11 (w11b16) 1.6 Supercharged
Now for the 2nd gen cars. NOTE: 2nd gen Convertible was released in 2009 in Cooper and Cooper S trim.
2007-2010 R56 and R57 Cooper = N12 (n12b16) Non Turbo
