Is it the fuel pump?

Last Friday some friends and I went to get some sushi, we went in just long enough for the people to tell us it was way too long of a wait. Went back out to the car, and it wouldn't start. At first it would almost turn over then die. now it doesn't even come close.

I replaced the fuel filter today seeing as my car is 134K miles and never been changed this thing had some gross almost sludge like stuff in it. Hoping it would allow the pump to do it's job now, I tried starting. Still nothing. I checked the fuel pump fuses and they look fine, is this a certain fuel pump replacement or could it be something entirely different?

If starter turns well, these are the usual suspects: battery, plugs, wires, coil, pump, fuel rail pressure regulator. Best to check everything before putting money into it. If batt checks out ok, get a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail schrader valve under the intercooler. A good pump should give you around 52psi for the R53. A good pressure would point you elsewhere....probably the ignition system.
