I bought it used in 2010 and experienced the rare but occasional "death rattle" which I've read about extensively on this website as an all too common problem among current and former JCW owners. But I maintained the car so well, and had it checked out by my compentent mechanic with every oil change and it never got any worse in either frequency or duration. That is until the past month
Sounds like you had the chance to get it fixed but you went with a mechanic instead of a MINI dealer. Shame on you. You knew the issues are their but neglected it. Just my opinion.

Is the warranty up? Did you purchase an extended warranty?

Should I write Mini and ask them to pay for part or all of the repairs?
Why not, it can't hurt.

Is there any precedent for Mini to take responsibility for what is an all too common and systemic problem that seems related to bad parts at point of manufacture, rather than wear/tear, etc?
Nope. You can read this http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/05/...fix/#more-9156
What advice would you give me?
Stay calm and talk nicely to whoever will listen to help you. It is not their fault.

haha no that wasn't it. I got right on it based on the info you sent me. THANK YOU! Looking into warranty coverage issues, etc - but I should be all right and it seems like all it needs is rather minor chain belt tensioner tightening, or something like that. Thanks again.
