Temperature sensor "recall" - cold start on hot day
My 2010 R56 LCI MCS is suddenly having problems with a cold start on a hot day (in the 90s Farenheit). The dealer says this is a known issue and a faulty temperature sensor is the subject of a replacement program by MINI.
The engine starts but just chugs as if it's about to stall. Sometimes it comes good, sometimes it needs several attempts then it fires (in a cloud of grey smoke
). No warning lights or message. This apparently is the typical set of symptoms.
Even with the turbo fan that was a recall in other countries, MINI here in Australia just rolled it out through normal servicing or on request
. They're doing likewise with the temperature sensor
so it might be a recall elsewhere; if not, it's worth requesting the replacement if you're somewhere with hot weather.
And MINI Australia has run out of the replacement part so mine's on order from Germany
- hopefully getting here before I head off to hot inland areas over Christmas!!

Thanks. My starting problem is only for cold starts (ie first start of the day) on a hot day, but I get the hesitation and slow warm-up you mention.
Thanks for the info - it's encouraging to know the fix really works.
