Where's this black oily stuff coming from? Head gasket?

Where's this black oily stuff coming from? Head gasket?
I find black oil residue on the left side of the engine. I think it's the head gasket. Anyone else had similar patterns?

maybe valve cover gasket?

probably sloppy oil changes. its a pita to remove the oil filter canister w/o spilling.
