Failed on the Freeway - Not engaging into gear

Hello and thank you for reading this!

I was driving my Mini Cooper on the freeway today when all the sudden (no unexpected noises), it slipped out of gear, and didn't go back.

I pulled over, turned the car off, back on, and wouldn't engage into gear. It was as if the car was in neutral. Had to get it towed from there.

Any ideas?? Thank you!

Ben

Failed CVT tranny....they use a belt and two pullues internally...no "gears".
about a 6500$ fix...dealer is only real option...many have tried to rebuild thses, but even pro shops have nightmare issues and WEEKS trying to get it to work....
Sorry to tell you the bad news, good luck.

If you look around on here there are two shops that do rebuild the CVT. They might be your best bet.

Hey ZippyNH,

Thank you very much for that quick response! Well, that is just about the worst news in this situation. But your knowledge of the matter is quite helpful.

Sorry to hear about the problem. There is a lot of threads here discussing the CVT failure problem. Search the threads for a swap to a "real" automatic. I think Way Motors has experience doing this swap and maybe can help.

Wow - I had no idea it was such a common issue. But thanks for that, Eddie07S
