New recall for the Engine coolant temperature sensor?

I received a email from the dealership I bought my car from today about a service campaign. Anyone else hear about this or what's up? I have a '11 R56 S.

From the email,

As I am sure you aware, MINIUSA has announced an "open service campaign" being to Retrofit the Engne Coolant Temperature Sensor.

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM

Internal corrosion could form in the engine coolant temperature sensor. This corrosion leads to internal bridging of the contacts, which can cause an inaccurate engine temperature reading. This false reading could lead to difficulty in the engine starting and/or a “Service Engine Soon” lamp being illuminated.

Yes, they're doing that for at least the 2011 and 2012 cars. I believe they replace the thermostat and thermostat housing as well as the sensor. I had my car in for other reasons (maintenance, warranty repairs on some smaller stuff) and they performed the service campaign as well.

Cool. I see you're in the south bay also. Did you bring it to Stevens Creek Mini or elsewhere?

They'll only change the oil if your light is on or if the "all knowing key fob" tells them to do it.

Or if you pay them to. Here's their internet coupon:
http://www.miniofstevenscreek.com/Specials_D
Ask them if they will apply it to your R56, my local dealer gives us the same price.

Not true. I was within the 2000-3000 range and I was able to bring mine in at 12,500 miles. My service light was not on.

My paperwork says that they replaced:

Replaced Coolant Temp Sensor with retrofit kit per SIM 17-08-12

Adapter Hose
Coolant hose
Cable Strap
Antifreeze/coolant

It doesn't list the thermostat housing, I might call and ask my SA tomorrow if the housing is being replaced too, that would be great.

for my 2011 mcs, got a call from my dealer about temperature sensor 'recall' as well as timing chain tensioner. i don't know if this is a recall or campaign. apparently my dealers knows about this and they just looked up my vin# to verify.

folks with 2011-2012 should definitely call in to check!

Took my 2011 R55 to my local dealer (Mini of SF) on Saturday, for an oil change and they told me that they will be working on " temperature sensor 'recall' as well as timing chain tensioner" as well. They gave me a loaner for now.

My SA did mention that they were checking the timing chain tensioner as well on 2011 and newer models. Funny thing is when picking up my car up on Saturday, my check engine light came on right away and it's still been at the dealership since then. No word on what the issue is even after asking the engineers in Europe. He mentioned it may have something to do with the VANOS timing or something. =?

Took mine in Saturday for the coolant sensor recall and then got the call that is also has an oil leak. I guess they had to take off the oil pan to fix it.

My car is a 2012 Cooper S and it just turned 5,000 mile. I always noticed that when I would use sport mode it would backfire. Now that the new sensor is in i,m not hearing any backfiring.

So, does the recall replace the entire Coolant Temp Sensor with the new and improve one? It doesn't look like it and just just added some different adapters/hoses to the old Temp Sensor.

It places a coolant temp sensor in the upper radiator hose just prior to the connection to the t-stat (modified upper radiator hose is installed in replacement of what came in vehicle) and a y cable connection (pig tail) to the original connection which allows the DME to better determine cooling strategies during vehicle operation. They do not replace the T-Stat with this campaign. If you look @ the 2013 and some late model 2012's you will notice that BMWNA and MINIUSA went back to their old T-stats because of this.
