The other day I was with a couple friends and I was entering a main highway and i accererated from 45 to 110mph pretty quickly and I noticed a smell and my friend in back said "what's that smell", I joked and said that's what 110 smells like. All kidding aside I am kind of worried about it. Recently I have gotten this smell a few times when pushing the car. What can this be? Should I be worried? I have pulley so I am afraid to take it to the dealership.

that was the smell of my exhaust, since i was speeding by you...

no, kidding... rubber maybe? or did it have a more metally smell... maybe you rode the clutch a little much and it was a burning clutch smell?

those are the 2 smells I get from time to time

Don't be afraid to take it to the dealer. The only thing they should flat out refuse to fix is the blower. All other items should have a warranty. The smell could be a issue, that wil get worse over time, that is unrelated to the blower spinning 15% faster that a non JCW. If they find the smell and refuse to resolve it because of the pulley, at least you know what you are smelling.imho.

Speculating here... The catalytic converter can produce novel smells when you operate at speeds/rpms that are not "moderate" ??

Further speculating... Did you mod or repair the exhaust recently? That's another source of not-typical smells, when parts of that system are "pushed" a bit.

Whatever MIDAS is joining exhaust system pieces together with, that stuff gets on the pipe near the joint as well as in it, heats up and burns off stinkily?

Does it smell like Teen Spirit?

I have the same thing going on and I don't have a %15 pully...yet
It is worse when the roof is open.
Please let us know what the dealer tells you.

Describe your smell. Does it smell like burning (clutch, handbrake, etc.) or does it smell kinda sweet like engine coolant. I know that when mine leak coolant, it was easily smelled in the cabin and it happens while accelerating. I say look in the engine compartment and look behind the engine (behind the MINI sticker on the block) at the heat shield under the coolant expansion tank and see if there are whitish brown spots on the metal heat shield. But like I said, there are many different types of smells so it would help if you describes yours.

You ever follow a big truck and it smells bad? That is what it smelled like. In a lesser fashion. At first I thought It was a truck up ahead of me, but after I smelled it again a few days later I realized it was my car. I have to call dealership anyways because my windshield cracked :???: so when I make an appointment I guess I will ask them a few questions.

I had something similar a while back. It turned out I had run over a plastic grocery bag that stuck to the hot exhaust pipes. SInce I usually drive about 5 miles a day to work it took a good 2 months to burn off completely.

The other possibility is the catalytic converter. Ever drive up a long hill behind an older car and get that diesel-fart smell? My theory is an overly rich mixture on an overly warm cat.

Eau du Clutch?

Lift off of accelerator while changing gears, and promptly release clutch while shifting should cure that smell.

I have thought the same thing. Then one day it dawned on me that their were no cars in front of me.

I'd double check the coolant expansion tank. If you haven't replaced yours already, it may be time. The tanks leak at the horizontal seam, and coolant runs downaround the exhaust header. Smells. And when you are accelerating, or at speed, you push more out and down onto the hot exhaust. Worth a look.

I have the same smell. I first notice it after I install my custom airbox which has the partition cut open to bring air in from the cowl vent at the base of the windshield. I now have a 15% reduction pulley. I am starting to think its an exhaust leak or maybe the crank case breather (if there is one). I think its coming in through the partition at the back of airbox. What I will try this weekend is taping over the hole in the partition.

Weaverpsu is your partition cut open or removed?

Now that the weather is nice and I am motoring with the window open the smell is concerning me. My car is going in for service and I will have them check for an exhaust leak.

FYI, I taped over the hole in the partition. This stopped the smell, and confirmed my suspicion of which path the fumes are take. Now we need to still find the cause of the smell.

WeaverPSU: What road are you hitting 110 on? If you're up near State College, are there any roads non-state trooper infested stretches? Seems like every time I shoot up 322 they are all over the place, especially between the HD dealership and the Toftrees exit...

p.s. weaverPSU, BUCKEYEmcs...

Could the smell be related to your using Big10 schools in your Usernames?

Actually I am not at PennState anymore
I was a little confused on what i was going for and combined with a bad semester I stopped going. (notice i didnt say dropped out) As I remember I hardly ever saw cops on 80 on the way to PSU if you are really itching to hit triple digits.

I live in Jersey now and it was on Rt. 80. I have had it a few times at 130 and slightly above. Basically no traffic whatsoever during these escapades. Anyhow part of the reason I am no longer in school is that I am a procrastinator. I never had the smell checked out and I haven't smelled anything in a while but it is still a concern. Windshield is cracked, I am going to call tomorrow about it and when I bring it in I will ask them a few questions.

I also bought my car in Morristown and like dropping it off there because I enjoy the restaurants. However the service stinks and now I am going to check out Ramsey because they have much better feeback.

Funny, that is the same answer I got from MAG here in Columbus. They basically said they could not smell anything. That is nuts because everyone who has been in the car has smelled it.
Of couse the service guy could have been distracted. He was pulled over for speeding in my car while trying to duplicate the smell.

Anyone get this fixed? I have had it in 3X now, and even though it is getting worse they say it is normal.
