Steering Angle Sensor Replacement???

I've read lots on the problem that causes DSC / TPS lights to stay on. I removed my SAS and found one the 4 contact points ground off. They are EXTREMElY fragile. I replaced it with a used one from a dismantler ($55) and reset the fuse. Lights out for about a minute....Then right back on. So...my question is has anyone successfully changed their SAS on their own without a trip to a BMW computer to reinitialize the sensor. I'm finding both answers during search but I'm interested to know if there are people out there that HAVE done it without a reprogramming.

On a side note. If it does take reprogramming it'll still save $$$ to do the actual replacement yourself then go to the dealer. It was quite easy.
