Loose gas door

Hey everybody. I have an 04 MC40 and noticed the chrome gas door is really loose. Wondering if there is some kind of spring to help hold/pull it into the closed position. If I don't lock the doors before pulling away it tends to fly open. Just looking for some feed back before I pull everything apart. Thanks.

the chrome cap sits on the hinge assembly and the retraction spring is part of that assembly - the entire cup that surrounds the filler neck. A friend recently had the same problem and we fixed it by replacing the 'cup' assembly that the cap attached to.

It isn't a particularly difficult fix - best to pull back the wheel well liner so you can see from the back - then you release two nuts that will allow you to pull the fuel filler pipe back from the cup and rubber grommet - then the cup assembly can be removed from the car, it just snaps into place..... You keep your chrome cap, it is held on by one screw...

PM if you want a part number and source. {or BA just jump in here . . }

Thanks for the info. I'm going to pull it apart soon, hope the spring is still in the wheel liner so I can put it back on.

Mine is also loose, and I have the replacement sitting in my garage awaiting the procedure...

Finally tore it apart. The white plastic hinge pin had popped out. Snapped back into place, all done. Took longer to get the whole assembly out than to fix it. Oh well, at least it's fixed.
