Does our MCS have a blow off valve? If it does has anyone gotten an upgrade? And does it void the warranty?

Thanks

tony

Supercharged vehicles normally have bypass valves, which perform the same function as blowoff valves, but vent boost back into the intake system behind the filter. The one on the MCS is a bolt on piece, proprietary to the car, and I have yet to see an aftermarket part.

Tony, could you explain why you think a supercharger needs one? Thanks.

I would have a guess that it wouldn't need one because the belts provided the needed boost. I will assume it will have the right amount needed never to much?? But to my own stupid question, NO blowoff value needed for MCS.

Thanks all sorry

I have a question since where on the topic.

the hose that conects between the bypass vavle and the intake before the supercharger, what would happen if you where to remove it? just a question i know that you would be dumping air that has been acounted for by the MAS, but would it make it sound different?
thanks

Now thats rice.

Miniracer_03: The by-pass valve is controled by vacume after the TB and before the SC. Since the valve is also after the SC and near the intake part of the heads, you idle would be very high since the TB would not be restricting the air flow because the by-pass valve would be open to the outside and sucking air.

From what I understand, the reason for a blow off valve is to vent pressure when the throttle is closed between shifts so that the excess pressure doesn't damage the throttle body when the throttle is closed. I thought about this as well, then realized that the SC is in the airstream BEFORE the throttle body, so there would be no need to vent boost to the outside between shifts. I'm pretty sure this is the case, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Miniracer_03,

There is no Mass Airflow Sensor in the MINI. Air is measured using a speed-density calculation from the MAP sensor, RPM, and known values for volumetric efficiency. One could plug the bypass valve's port into the supercharger inlet and plumb the bypass to the atmosphere. It just wouldn't accomplish anything.

i have been told by one of the guy at my work that was a trained mini technican then went to regular BMW's told me that there WAS a Blow off valve. but the way it is used its not like a regular one for a turbochargered car. or something like that.

All charge air systems surely are designed with a pressure relief valve. In turbo systems it is really called a waste gate and in supercharges a blow-off valve. they are there to prevent overboosting by whatever cause. Blowers seldom if ever "open" a valve while turbos do so routinely when you are attempting to abuse the motor......
