Timing Chain Check Procedure

Anyone know where to find the step-by-step factory procedure dealers follow to determine chain stretch? Is there a preliminary check that does not require completely removing it to measure the length?

Thanks,

Thanks! Is there a version for the N12? I doubt there would be a material difference in the procedure, but I am sure the jerk service manager at my dealer (based on previous experience) will point out it does not apply to my car, only the N14, and refuse to execute it.

Thanks again,

No noise now other than "zing" on startup from cold. The TSB above says this is "normal". I am trying to develop a plan to get MINI to replace the entire chain/tensioner assembly before I purchase the car off-lease.

The "zing" is normal, it's apparently (I say apparently because I saw that on a BMW doc) the oil pump who make this noise, so no worries about it

It's not the oil pump making the noise. It's the timing chain rubbing on the head or block until the oil pressure is up to pressurize the tensioner. You will notice if you shut down immediately after a cold start and restart right away, the zing is gone. That's because the oil has not yet drained out of the tensioner. Wait a couple of hours and the zing is back.

Since you are in France, any idea about why there is so little info on the web about timing chain issues with Peugeots and Citroens that have the same motor? Is it because it's all in French and my Google browser only searches english sites?

Hard to imagine this is not a problem with all applications using the N 12/14/16/18 motors. If not, how come BMW has not incorporated the solution for the Mini?

Thanks,

There is many many problems on the Peugeot and Citroën with the N14 engine, especially on the 207 RC, 207 THP and DS3 THP.
These engine is also available on other models (Peugeot 308, 508, 3008, 5008, Citroën DS4, DS5, C4, and maybe others...) but 3/4 of the cars here got diesel engine, so this is a known issue, but not for everybody who doesn't care about petrol engine...
You can find problems on the Peugeot and Citroën on these forums for example :

Well, you confirmed my suspicions. All those sites are french. (Don't remember enough from my grade school french teacher.)

Thanks,
