Ok, can anyone else out there with a 2010/11 cpr s with the N18 engine tell me this. Are you able to rev your engine in neutral, clutch in or out, over 4000 rpm? My car will not rev past 4000 in neutral, or with the clutch in. Is this normal, or has my dealer not removed the electronic engine limiter before giving it to me?

 

 

i am pretty sure i have revved over 4k in neutral. 2008 mcs.

 

My N14 motor doesn't do this. Maybe it's a new bit of programming for the N18 that will protect you from yourself

 

Mine lets me rev it all the way up in neutral.

Maybe it's something with your country? So you can't sit at red lights and rev the engine at other people? that's all I can think of.

Try it shortly after start-up and then try it later on after the car is nice and warm. My M3 won't let me rev high after start-up. Its needs to be completely warm. It is DCT, dealer said its purposely limited this way.

 

I've noticed, when renting cars, that a lot of automatic transmission cars have a lower rev-limiter in neutral than in gear. I haven't tried standing on the throttle in my Cooper (manual) in neutral, though.

 

I've seen a brief blip to 5k on my MCS while demo'ing the JCW exhaust in the garage...that was plenty at the time.

 

Old timers will tell you that it's generally not a good idea to free-rev an engine without a load on it. There are various arguments as to why this is so, and I honestly have not taken the time to decide what I believe and why. I know that cylinder pressure is lower on a free reving cylinder, but don't understand why that would make a difference.
A few years ago I read (can't remember where) that auto manufacturers often set different rev limiters for neutral and loaded. So it would seem that some manufacturers also agree with this notion.

 

my M3 limited revs while cold, it makes sense the Minis do as well

 

N14's have a feature called "Launch RPM" that allows drag racers to floor it at the starting line without exceeding the red-line --- at least that's one application for the feature. Saves having to feather the gas pedal while waiting for a green lite. This RPM can be changed by an AP tuner, and probably any other tuning process.

Could this be what you're experiencing?

 

All valid points guys, but this car came straight from Germany, so I doubt it's a "country thing". Could it possibly be new software to prevent over boost to the engine when not under load?
I just tested it after the half hour long drive home from work and it still will not go past 4000. It sounds as if it hits the rev limiter, or a fuel cut off. I'm just hoping that they haven't forgotten to remove the electronic limiter for transport. That would suck if they've been keeping HP from my right foot lol.
Any MINI technicians here that would know anything about what this could possibly be?

Dude, don't ask. When I purchased my car, the dealer was showing me the route for the ship and it comes out've Germany.
I had my car in May of 2010, but it had an N18 engine. When I sent pics of it to NM Engineering for reference on what engine it was to make sure their intake would fit it, the guys response was, "WOW!! Where did you get that"?

 

Well I guess what I should have asked is if it revs over 4k in gear. I'm sure you would have noticed if it didn't.

I generally take off with tach under 1000rpm in normal driving, and 1,200-1,500 if I'm taking off in a hurry (ok, maybe 2k once or twice). I'd probably never notice this if the car were mine, and think it must be an intended "feature." But not having a car as new as yours, I can only guess.

 

Oh yea! In gear everything goes like clockwork, I just want to know why it won't do it in neutral.

I was watching a youtube vid of the 2012 CPR S and it revs beyond 4000 in neutral. It's really starting to get to me. Almost making me paranoid that the dealer has told my tech not to release the full potential of the car or something...

 

Sorry, I haven't had the urge to tear-up an engine just to hear it scream.

 

My N12 will not rev over 4,000 in Neutral.

 

Believe me, I'm not trying to tear up my engine, but I do want to ensure that I'm getting every single bit of HP I paid SO damn much for!! I swear I must have the most expensive stock CprS in the damn world lol!!

 

A warm throttle rev'ing will NOT ruin the engine.

You aren't really losing any HP because your vehicle still works properly in gear and the engine isn't limited while driving.

I just don't see the need to rev above 4000 in neutral.

 

I also don't understand the freewheeling of an engine in neutral. Perhaps the limit is the manufacturers way of telling you it is not a good idea. I recall that on some engines you could float the valves over revving the engine in neutral.

 

I really just want a valid reason why it won't do it. After watching tons of vids of MINI's being able to do that, I just want to make sure it's not an issue or a sign of something wrong about to happen.
I did a test run today using my G-Tech meter and that sucker gave me some weird numbers!! 0-60 in 5.6secs. 262HP. Like wtf

 

The G-tech is just guessing about HP. It has to assume the weight of the car, the traction available, that you're using all of the traction available, and a whole lot of other things. Don't rely on it for HP numbers.

 

Mine revs to redline out of gear with no problem(2011 MCS). Just did one quick blip the other day by accident when trying to take my jacket off and pushed straight down with my foot. With my exhaust, eveyone was annoyed in the garage I work at lol.
