Not a MINI-specific question, but one my wife was wondering about the other day as I was having fun engine braking on an off ramp. I didn't know, so I promised to ask you folks. Does engine braking use as much fuel (per rev) as during idle or actually even less???

I would suppose the same as idling, but that's just my guess as to what the ECU is telling the injectors to do

Unless you're blipping and rev matching it does put much more wear on your expensive clutch rather than on your inexpensive brakes.

If the revs are high enough. fuel is completely shut off. It is gradually added as the RPMs drop to prevent stalling. This is a typical Engine management scheme. On 'grandpa' cars, sometimes features like anti-clunk are added. This keeps the fuel the same and ramps down the injector ontime until they are off much more slowly. This is to help prevent the noticable driveline clunk as you wobble the accelerator.

but throttle blipping is so much fun! i do it all the time....the MINI is a great setup to do it with by just rolling your foot over to the accelerator while braking. makes for some very smooth transitions....

you guys are missing a great driving experience by just using your brakes....besides, when approaching a corner at fast speeds you can't tell me it's not annoying to slam on the brakes, then shift, and then raise the revs to drop a gear and then go back to the brakes - all before you enter the turn.......

just throttle blip while braking instead.

Thanks for the info!

For those advising against downshifting I did read the debate on this,

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...mp;topic=13060

and I do use my breaks, but I also have fun especially when I expect to accelerate soon after braking. Cheers.
