Camshaft position sensor

Camshaft position sensor

I need the experts here. I'm getting code P0340 which is faulty camshaft position sensor. My ASC light comes on too sometimes and I cannot turn it off. I'v read other threads about this same exact issue, but no one ever finished the thread.

I've also read that it's not the camshaft sensor but rather the CRANKshaft sensor.

Car runs perfectly fine except starting in the morning I crank it and it misses basically so I then recrank and bingo starts normally. Car accelerates perfectly and idles fine. I have a Scanguage and monitor everything.

Anyone's thoughts on this?

The car runs ok because the computer uses the crank position sensor as a backup to the cam position sensor for spark and fuel delivery timings. Best to get a new cam sensor if your scangauge was telling you the sensor was bad. The hard starting is because the computer is not getting the signal from the cam sensor to know when to squirt fuel and fire the plug. When you go to restart it immediately, the computer makes at this time, the decision to go off of the crank sensor as the back up.

I'm not one to let things go, but I wont be able to get under the car and replace the part for a few weeks. Am I causing any unnecessary wear/tear on the car?

Cam sensor is approx. under the pass side motor mount. Not too bad. Crank sensor is on front middleish of car, not really easy. IIRC

Just installed the new CAM sensor. I know I could have bought it online for about $100, but I couldnt wait. MINI wanted $220, but the guy at the parts counter asked how much they were online and I said about $100 bucks and he's like well I'll mark this one down for you, BAM $140 bucks. That made me happy.

Anyways, I wont know if the problems solved until the cars totally cold and I go to start it.

Easy install BTW.

-Remove engine vibration mount and detach all the hoses etc.
-Put jack until engine on passenger side to support, carefull on placement.
-Remove 4 engine mount bolts 16mm I think. Do it slowley to make sure the engine is supported firmly or your engines gonna drop out and brake everything.
-Remove Engine mount bracket
-Loosen and remove 10mm camshaftsensor bolt
-Remove sensor
-Put it all back together.

20 mins at most.

$220?!

The mini dealership in OKC wanted $140 for the one they had, but he gave it to me for $120 as I told him it was $120 online from penskeparts.

Is this pulse generator the same part?

http://parts.miniofkennesaw.com/products/Mini/2003/Cooper-S/Pulse-generator--camshaft/1275391/12141485845.html

It seems much cheaper than what you're saying. I'm getting the camshaft position sensor error as well.

Yup, that's the ticket.

$70.99 here with free shipping...

MSRP is $85.98, so not sure why OCKOLBY was quoted price of $220 , unless prices have dropped dramatically since 2011, when this thread was hatched.

I know this is an old thread, but this is a peeve of mine. My local dealer also charges way over list price for small parts. Don't assume your local dealer sells at list price... I've deduced the dealer one town away charges list price and of course there are lots of dealers online - the best deals seem to be 20~25% below list.
