Boot will not latch

I have a 2002 MC. The rear hatch has been rattling alot. I have just lived with it, but now the hatch will not latch. Is this an easy DIY fix?

Could be easy.
Check this link to RealOEM.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...80&hg=41&fg=60

Parts 8 and 9 are what need to be checked first. They might be loose.
8 is on the body
9 is on the “Trunk Lid” hatch.

Hope this helps

Have you checked to see if the hinges are ok? See NAM link. Also check parts item #5. There are 2 rubber stop buffers on the lid. They may need to be adjusted in or out depending on if it is making tight contact.

There's a couple of links on the site below under the "exterior" tab that addresses boot issues. Hope that helps.

Check your hinges, I heard of a few rusting out.

Thanks for the info. The boot has mysteriously fixed itself??? It now latches and doesn't rattle....go figure. I'm still going to keep my eye on it

I've already had my hinges replaced. I had a problem with the hatch not lining up properly. It was about a 1/2 inch out of alignment and actually hit the bumper when you closed it. One hinge actually snapped in half when I tried to adjust it.

hey guys, my mini is having the same problem now. for a little bit my boot wouldn't open, then it just made a series of like 5 weird clicks and now it won't shut at all. I just went out there and manually closed it with a screwdriver so it's latched, but I think something is up with the mechanism because it's perfectly aligned and the mechanism is tight lined up.

never mind, my hatch fixed itself too. made me look like a fool when I went to have it looked at and the tech just straight up opened the boot that was supposed to be stuck
