Sunroof vent position problem
Sunroof vent position problem
My '07 MCS has developed a strange problem, and so far I haven't seen it on NAM. Yes, I've had the sticks-when-hot opening issue since my car was new, but my problem occurs when I try to close it from the vent position. Simply put, I can't. The roof goes down, but pops up again and again. The only way I can close it when in the vent position is to actually open the roof (or open it part way), and then it closes completely as it should.
My car is way out of warranty, so I don't want to run to the dealer if I don't have to, but I was wondering if anyone else had this particular symptom. I'm not sure this is even hardware, as the roof performs normally otherwise. When it does stick in hot weather, I simply give the panel a little nudge, and it opens just fine. This new problem started several months ago.
Thoughts, anyone?

It is the same issue as when the sunroof closes back! I had both of them on my 07 MCSa... Basicly what happens, if you have the sunroof in the vent position the high-friction causes the anti-trap mechanism to return back to the vent position. The anti-trap mechanism always returns the roof back to the position it prevoiusly was: if it was closed, it will close it back, if in vent, then it will go back in vent.
You need to do the following:
-Realign the window panes in a slightly tilted position (front edge 1.5mm lower than the seal, rear edge 0.5 higher). First front pane, then back. There are 6 torx M25 on which pane for that, visible from the inside.
-Lubricate the rails with lithium grease: Make sure you do the inside of the rails, where the guides actually slide (look at the how the roof mechanism works and you"ll figure it out).
-Lastly you need to reinitialize the sunroof! This is important, because the computer "learns" the forces necessary to move the unit and it calibrates what it considers "anti-trap" force. Pretty easy: With ignition on, just keep the sunroof button in the close position (first resistance point, NOT the automatic close of the 2nd point) until the roof completes a cycle. (After about 20s it will go into vent, then fully open and close back completely).
All this made a difference with mine and I now know that the roof opens faster than it used to, is quiter at speed and apparently it no longer stucks as much...
Update: Do read the SIM 54 03 08 on the issue from MINI! It's in the MINI Gen 2 Technical Service Bulletins

Mine started doing this a couple of months ago. I thought it was a result of programming in auto open/close to the computer. Looks like I'll be cleaning and lubing it up this weekend.
