Metal in bell housing area.

I have an '05 S with almost 75k miles. It was making a wierd noise. Took it to the shop, Motoring Magic, in Thousand Oaks and the starter stopped working. The shop took the starter out and saw the there is some aluminum stuck in the flywheel teeth, and I'm not sure if the starter was jammed in there or not. Because of the cost of tearing the tranny off, I'm broke, we are going to clean the Al out of the teeth put a new starter on and see what happens. But any idea, what aluminum would be flying around in that area?
