A few engine issues in my '11 Hardtop

I just called the dealership to make an appointment to have my car looked at. But I wanted to post here to see if you guys could give me some input as to whats going on.

1. Cold start sound. When I start the car up in the morning, the engine sounds fairly loud and rough. It will quiet down after a minute or so.

2. Squealing when idling. Im noticing high-pitched squealing coming from the engine on the passenger side I think, when it's idling. I just noticed it yesterday, and it seems to now do it more often than not.

3. Slip or 'misfire' when accelerating. Especially when in 1st gear. When I reach 2500 RPMs the car feels like it slips or misfires when im accelerating.

1. The engine is pretty noisy when cold... sounds a bit like a diesel. Might be nothing but considering the other issues you report, maybe not.

I think the squealing sound is the most troubling. I've read a few posts that described the noise and from their end it sounded like something to do with the water pump.

I don't know if the acceleration thing is just me being hyper-sensitive to a new car or not. But I made an appt just in case.

Get the water pump checked out. That is the squealing noise.

The loud noise at start-up is most likely the following...

SI M18 01 10

Exhaust Systems
December 2010

Technical Service

N18 – Cold Start Exhaust Rattle Noise

MODEL

R55 Cooper Clubman S, R56/R57 Cooper S and R60 Cooper Countryman S with N18 engine

SITUATION
The customer complains about a rattle noise coming from the exhaust/turbocharger area during a cold start. The noise lasts for approximately 20-30 seconds after the engine starts and is audible outside the vehicle.
INFORMATION
In order to meet stricter (ULEV2) emissions criteria, the N18 engine turbo wastegate activation strategy has been revised in comparison to Cooper S vehicles equipped with the N14 engine. In higher ambient temperatures (between 64° and 86° F), the turbocharger wastegate stays fully open during a catalyst warm-up. This condition produces a rattle type of “acoustic feedback” and is created by the rotating wastegate valve face. Valve rotation is required for proper valve seating. This type of rattle noise is considered a normal operation/characteristic of the N18 turbocharger wastegate.

My 2011 MCS does this during every cold start.

Chunky is pretty noisy when I start it in the morning as well. Sometimes, I think somebody swapped the engine out with a big a** diesel. But even when it is hot, at idle it is still kinda loud. My of course loud is subjective.

For your other two problems (#2 and #3), I would take it in.

I have #2 & #3 of your issues. My car is going to the dealer tomorrow. I'll let you know if I get anymore info from them.

I know there are some on here that are going to disagree, but I had that idle issue and it was due to a Shell station outside of my normal station that I exclusively used 93 V-Power.It ran like crap and when I let it go empty I refilled with my local Shell and back to running like a top.As said in previous post we don't really know what their filling their tanks with nowadays.......Additionally IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OCTANE,I can attest to that. Are you using premium?

I've only filled it once since I had it. Went to a Shell down the street and put in Mid-grade. My MA told me since it's a non-S I wouldn't need to do premium, but at least go with the mid. Im just about do for another fill, possibly try using premium?

I've always had cars where you just fill in regular and go. This is the first one that needs a little coddling.

I thought 3 was pretty normal. My 2011 does it too and at first I thought it was strange but I took the car in for something else and they gave me a loaner and the loaner did the same thing.

As for what type of gas, there are a million threads about that with as many opinions. My owners manual says it can run on 87 just fine. The sticker on my gas cap says 89. imo, anything over 89 on a non-S is a waste of money. But, that is just my opinion and I'll probably get slammed for it because I know a lot of people disagree.

Something as simple as that might be your cure. You can justify the premium price by the great gas MPG

Oh ,on another note check your oil and make sure your dipstick is seated well in the tube(fully down)Sometimes it will affect idle.

I only use Chevron 91oct (highest avail in CA) and check my oil religiously and the dipstick is seated properly. Dropping off this morning. Will report back when if I get any more info.

Im going to try out the premium when I fill up today. See if there's any difference. Its only going to be an extra $ or so over the 89, so I'd say it's worth it to give it a shot. I know there are a ton of gas threads around here, but Shell and Chevron(none in my area) seem to be the favorites. Anyone had good results with Phillips 66? Seems to be on the top tier list. Now Im just nitpicking....

I've got the same owners manual as you and it most certainly does NOT say it can run on 87 just fine. It say the good stuff is HIGHLY recommanded but it will run on 87 (Meaning if nothing else is avaliable)

I'm not familiar with Phillips 66.Do you have a Texaco(same co. as Chevron) they both have the Techron additive to them which is good.I put Techron in mine about every 3000 mi.or so or before an oil change. You might try some ,it can't hurt.Quite a few people on here have tried it with good results including me.

No Texaco either. I'll just stick with Shell and see how that goes.

I'm going to check on this in more detail on my Mini later. But are you hearing the squealing when you're sitting inside the car? Or you're standing in front of the car?

Misfire, do you hear a sound associated with this? Or do you feel a jolt while driving??

I've only noticed it when standing outside the car. It first started when my son was swinging on one of those bench swings, and it sounded like it was a squeaking from the swing. I told him to stop and the sound kept going. I lifted up the hood and it sounded the loudest when I put my ear up to the upper passenger's side of the engine.

No sound. More like a hesitation. I will accelerate and it will skip just for a split second, then continue on accelerating. It only happens, that I've noticed at around 2500-3000 RPMs. Mostly in 1st gear.

My car does 1, havent heard 2 or 3, what mine does also is when its cold the rev fluntcuate around 500 to 1300, at 500 it seems like its going to stall but it doesnt, does that couple of times but then it stabilizes itself, i've realized it also does it when i just turn it on wait couple of seconds and press the gas pedal lightly
here is a video i made couple of months ago

as of now they say the clutch seems good and they cannot reproduce the whine noise... keeping it overnight to see if they can reproduce with a cold start in the morning.

They did mention the description of the whine did sound like it could be the water pump issue.

I hear my whine/squealing from inside and outside the car but mostly inside... Also I guess i should mention i have a 2011 JCW so i have the N14 engine, not the new N18 that most 2011s have. So perhaps are issue are unrelated, but strange they are so similar, my "misfire" is exactly as you describe.

You have a Mini S, I do not. They are different engines and have different octane requirements.
