Door Alignment - Help ! Advice needed badly !

Hi Folks,

The driver's side door's chrome strip on my 2002 Cooper S stands proud (outwards towards you when facing the door) by 1/4'' from the other chrome strip that contines behind it on the bodywork of the rear driver's side. I read posts which say this is just a simple adjustment of the striker. Well in my case it wasn't just that as no matter how many times I adjusted the striker I just could not get it right because if I got the top of the door (where the chrome strip is) to line up with the other chrome strip, the bottom of the door would be recessed and not flush with the body. Conversely, if I got the bottom right, the top wouldldn't line up (i.e. it would come back to the original position of not having the 2 chrome strips aligning).

Am I missing something ? Is there another adjustment somewhere that I have to make ?

Aligning doors isn't too simple. The hinges may need shims. Best bet would go to a body shop and ask if they can help. For them it is a 5 min job and they may not charge much. Watching them do it will let you see how it is done.

After the door is aligned you may need to realign the window. That has rails that can be loosened under the door to get the in/out tilt.

Many thanks for the prompt reply, HRM Hmm, this is sounding expensive...especially if the window alignment is required too...i had that done at the stealership a few months ago. I have to take my car to the body shop to check correct a flaw in the paint job that they did on my rear spoiler and will see if they want to set the door for me while the car is there
