Hood Insulation from Mini Mania

Hey all,

Just took delivery of my 2010 MCCS and i have read about the dreaded hood scoop melting issues. I realize IF this problem were to occur it is covered under warrnaty but being stationed in Germany the language barrier at the warranty counter is sometimes a nightmare so would like to avoid this if at all possible.

I saw the insulation barrier for sale at MiniMania, part # G2NME1022 and was considering purchasing it. I have the painted scoop, NOT the chrome.

My fear is that this insulation only redirects the heat back onto the turbo and surrounding rubber hoses etc rather than absorbing the heat. Can anyone tell me if they have any experieince with this particular part? Good, Bad, opinions are appreciated.

Dont want the warp but dont want to harm other components in the process.

Also, is this the same fitted insulation that a Mini dealer would apply just incase there were warranty issues? The site seems to state this is an original Mini fit product.

thanks in advance !

Are you are talking about the flat piece of insulation that attached to the top of the hood? Cost is around $25. I have it and my scoop would get so hot I could not touch it. After install the shield (takes 2 Minutes) it drop the temp considerable, hopefully no replaced and repainted scoop in my future.

Sounds like the same one. failry flat, looks like it just takes 2 plastic fasterners to attach. You mention the insulation that goes on top of the hood. The 1 I am speaking about goes under the bonnet not under the scoop itself.

I am assuming also since the heat is being radiated around the engine that you havent had problems with any of the rubber hoses etc or turbo being damaged?

Thanks for the reply

This one? Works perfectly fine, no scoop melting in my 18 months of ownership (and this has been on for less than a year).

You really don't want your scoop "absorbing" heat, not unless you want it really want it to sag. This won't "redirect" any heat back on the turbo, heat rises. Besides, heat is that turbos friend...but an enemy of your scoop.

No heat issues on my 2010, just so you know. I run this shield, a TitanNM heatshield above the turbo, and I have my scoop fully opened with a MiniFini stainless steel scoop grille.

Excellent info and pic! Looks just like the 1 from Minimania that I went ahead and ordered.

i feel better now seeing that someone has had a good experience with it

In regards to heat being the turbos friend. I always thought unless it was a diesel heat was horrible for a turbo? Forgive my lack of knowledge. Only owned a turbo diesel Audi in the past.

i have seen numerous heat shields for our turbo that contains the heat on the hot side of the turbo (good) and not the cold side (bad). Sorry im not an expert but this is just what i have read, maybe someone else can shed some light on the details.
let us know how you like your shield, and any differences!

10Zero, how is the MiniFini scoop grill working for you? I ordered on in black last week.

I love it! You'll really feel the heat rolling out of it once you park, it's an excellent way of letting that heat escape. Only trade off is it allows quite a bit more water under the hood and onto the engine when washing the car. but I guess that's to be expected on an ample functioning scoop.

When you get it, it's pretty flat, and the inside portion of the scoop has some curvature to it. So before I actually screwed it in place, I curved it ever so slightly to get it where it fit 100% flush. A little bit of tension bowing, test fit, bend just a little more where needed, so on and so on til it was a perfectly flush fit (super easy). Don't bend too much, it's easy to shape.

Top portion of the scoop insert has 4 tabs with some super strong adhesive tape (little squares). A swipe of some rubbing alcohol on the scoop plastic where these tabs will sit, and they will not move once applied. When getting ready to fit into place, I would make sure that top (bottom as your looking at it) is flush the the scoop inlet, with the tabs hovering ever so slightly above the plastic, slide it down into place so the adhesive tabs touch the plastic, then screw it down. Believe me, you'll see what I mean when you're there, it's super easy.

And removing the scoop...super easy without breaking a single thing or tab. Many others have said to just yank straight up, there's even an easier way without risking any breakage...if you have a flat plastic trim removal tool around somewhere. Hollar if you want a couple of pics to show you what I mean. You can have it off in a minute with zero damage.

Nevermind - I found that this part is no longer included on 2010 MCS.
Is it possible they solved the hood scoop heat issue?
