headlight washer issue

I replaced one of my headlight washers and covers, since the original had been broken off by the prior owner. Replacement was super-easy, and it has functioned without problem since I did it. Today, however, I had something unexpected happen: when I arrived at my office, I saw that the washer was extended from the headlight housing. A closer look revealed that a white piece of plastic, basically "C" shaped, had been pushed out of the hole by the washer, and then couldn't be pulled back through. It was easy enough to push it through myself, but I'm now wondering if this is going to be an ongoing problem, and if this part is something that I was supposed to remove upon installation. Any ideas? I should have taken a picture, but forgot in the rush to get it back in place so I could get in to the office!

Its a clip that needs to be removed once installed. Itll work fine once removed.

That's what I figured, once I had a chance to compare the left to the right. Thanks for the confirmation that I can throw that part away!
