2005 mini Cooper s temp issues.

Hey guys,

Just bought a 05 McS about 2 months ago. Been great so far. Drove to work today ( pretty cold morning ) and was easy driving when I was noticing my mini wouldn't throw any heat into the cabin. Only cold air. So when I was getting a coffee my temp gauge redlined but I could hear the fan going and still no heat out of my vents. I popped the hood and no not hotness to the touch and my cooling tank was cold and normal shape. So I got back into the car, turned of the heat to the vents and my temp gauge dropped right back to normal settings? Not slowly but rapidly dropped. Then I tossed heT back on and felt actual hot air and then my gauged redlined again ? Any ideas what's up?

Check expansion tank coolant level when cold. Top up(you're low) and bleed system. There are 2 bleeders(one 8mm hex head next to thermostat cover and another in upper rad hose).

I was having similar issues with my 03. I took it into the shop and he said it looked like the coolant was low. He topped it up and it hasn't happened again yet.

I drove it home with no problems. Waited for it to cool and checked the expansion tank. EMPTY. So I bought some coolant and filled the tank to it's max level, ran it with the cap off to get some air bubbles out. When for a rip in the prefect car overheating style. Putting around style. And the needle on the temp gauge stayed right in the middle. Thanks for the help guys!
