The scoop on my '08 Clubbie S just started melting as well. The dealer will replace under warranty, but they told me that "MINI won't participate in the JCW upgrade."

Is the CF scoop made from real CF (layup) or is it an injection molded inlay (A print pattern)? Has anyone had the same problem with a CF scoop long term? Both my cars have this problem. Would be nice to fix it for good the first time. I also wonder if you could just take a hair drier and bend it back where it is supposed to be, pop on the $26.00 shield and be on your way?

A heat gun might get you closer to formable temperatures but I don't know what you'd get for results. There don't seem to be any anecdotal stories of the CF scoop failing so, all things being equal, I'd pick the CF AND install the heat shield. Since Mini doesn't seem to be supporting the CF exchange, I'll probably just buy the heatshield and live with a painted scoop until the next car.

Thanks to this thread and LadyGodiva I ordered the heat shield from Way Motor Works on Tuesday(on 14 June) for my newly delivered '11 JCW(on 13 June). Received the shield on 16 June--great service. Less than 5 minute install. Again, thanks my fellow NAMers. Nick

That's what it's all about.

So glad to hear it. Happy Motoring!

The shield from Way and the OEM are the same. I just had a new hood scoop installed and the dealer here in Denver comp'd me the OEM hood shield. The top of the scoop is now cool to the touch. I doubt that the $149 turbo shield will be necessary.

Yea, just the metal part. The other part is nothing but a felt type piece that MINI seemed to quit putting on in 2010. Now, mine is a 2010, but for some reason I had one on my car while all the other 2010s don't seem to have it. Could be because my car, which was ordered in June 2009, went into production 2 days into the first week of 2010 assemblies...just guessing.

It is sound insulation. I had it on my 2009 MCS but the dealer do not put it back on when they replaced the hood scoop. It now just has the heat shield on the underside of the hood. I have read threads that say it is only for minimal noise reduction but I am still going to ask the dealer why they did not reinstall it on my car. Stay tuned.

It is interesting to see the numerous variations of "fixes" for this issue. I spoke to a service technician at Mini of Loveland and he said they were told by Mini to always offer the CF scoop and that a CF scoop can be painted. My deal had not heard that and says the CF cannot be painted. My dealer has been very responsive to my issue though!

There's also a MINI Challenge Scoop Cooling Vent, but it's pricey

Here's a photo of it under the hood, or should I say bonnet...

My '10 has a dipping scoop as well. It's not bad, but you can see it. I brought it up and was told it may not be covered by the warranty, and it had to be "investigated," when I now know (thanks to all of you) that it should be.

I have given up fighting for these types of things, does anyone have suggestions for NY/NJ warranty repair, with a good reputation?

Thinking of going the CF route anyway, as it looks pretty.

You can order the small insulation piece under the metal...

shield from Mini, or from ECS Tuning or probably from other similar third parties like Penske. If you dig long enough (as I once did), you can find the part number for the much bigger hood insulation piece. AS mentioned earlier Mini deleted it some time back. It's mentioned in their 2010 "changes" TIS, along with things like the OBDII cover delete, rear seat belt buckle retainer clips and various other cost engineering/cheapening moves I guess they did.

How come there is no bulletin about this issue?

Warping/Melting hood scoop R56

Ironically, it took me a bird's dump on my hood to notice this issue. Went to my Lauderdale MINI service this morning and advisor said it was common issue,so he ordered part and said insulation will be installed as well.

Yep,

We have it here: Part # 51482183986

And the sound insulation: Which I believe was not being installed on 2011+ MINIs from factory or if you are missing it for some reason.

And the clips x 2 for the bottom of the black insulation. Part #51481915964

I want so badly to poke at the fact that every chance they get, some vendors here use advice threads to plug plug plug.......

Problem is, ECS seems to have EVERY factory upgrade/replacement part and at awesome prices, so I can't really bash them because if they didn't plug it, someone else would most likely recommend them anyway lol.

FYI... My car is already out of warranty and yesterday the dealer replaced my hood scoop, installed internal hood shield and turbo line shield all covered under "Manufacturer Recall".

glad I stumbled upon this thread ... didn't quite understand what you all were talking about until I got to paipuky's photos - went down to the garage to check mine out, and sure enough mine is warped! It's a 09 Cooper S, any chance the dealer will replace it since I'm out of warranty? It's going in for the chain/tensioner replacement on Nov 12, so I'll definitely plan on asking.

I had my scoop replaced about a year ago, but they wouldn't pay for the shield. Maybe I'll bring it in and get my $38 back.

I am in contact with my dealer about the timing chain recall right now, so I'll go ahead and ask about the scoop. Mine has been warped since about a month after purchase.

Mine is warped too. Can't hurt to ask when they do the timing chain and turbo oil line heat shield.
