Rattle/Tinning Noise in engine (hot)

Ok so I've done a lot of research on this page and first off let me say you guys know your stuff. I couldnt find anything with a fix like the problem Im having with one of my customers cars.

When the car gets to operating temp its making a rattle noise around 2-3,000RPM and is consistent. I can do it without the car moving. When its colder it makes the noise but at a higher RPM, say around 4,000+ but the customer doesnt hit that when cold so he didnt mention it. To best describe the sound, its like a heat shield rattling on metal. Its coming from the cylinder head area and more towards the chain side, my boss heard it in the vacuum pump so I removed it and it made no difference.

I also removed the turbo heat shields to eliminate that possibility. I also heard the chain guides are common to brake, so I removed the valve cover and everything appears fine. I know the tensioners fail cold, could they fail only hot? ... cheap Peugot parts.

Thanks!

good to see a mechanic getting actively involved in fixing his customer's car, most wouldn't bother.

well said. Very true. The majority of my problems have been fixed thanks to the forums, NOT my local dealer, who, suffice it to say, don't have a clue

I have the same problem and it's only when the car warms up from driving for 10 to 20 mins and then everytime I let off the gas around 3-4k I hear a ting noise like the a chain is hitting metal. At first I thought it was the transmisson but it's not. I can hear it at best when letting go of the gas and pushing the clutch in at those speeds.

Well I would try to eliminate the engine from the clutch by letting it warm up and try to reproduce it at a stop, with this car I was able to do it. If it ONLY does it when pushing the clutch it could be related to the transmission/clutch set up.

If you do find that its in the engine, I'd suspect the chain/tensioner like the car I just had.

When moving and I touch the 3500rpm range there is tons of engine noise that doesn't sound normal. If I accelerate into those rpm range fast and let off without even touching the clutch I hear the noise.

Oh ok, this is exactly why my customer came in. He said it only made it driving but with the right angle of the pedal I was able to get it to make the noise constantly, but like you said if its higher or lower then its quieter. This is likely due to the harmonic resonance of what ever part of the timing chain that is failing.

I would contact your dealer and try to get that addressed, express your concern of the timing chain.

IHeartE30s I'm also able to here the noise constantly if I hold the car around 3800 rpm and above. I'm taking it to the dealer today and we will see what they say.
