Drivetrain "lag"

I've searched on this but am thinking I don't know the right terminology. My gf's 05 MC has, well, lag. Like, if I back out, there's a little lag before the wheel starts turning. And I can sometimes feel it when changing gears. Another way to put it: when I was working on the brakes I was able to grab the (elevated) front wheel and turn it a fair bit in either direction without engaging the transmission.

Is this common with the 05s, is it a worry, is it something I should fix now before worse problems crops up?

Thanks!
