Engine/Tranny chatter?

03 Cooper S manual.

I hear metal chatter coming from the engine bay
* Whenever I give a little bit of gas. It doesn't matter if clutch is engaged or not.

I don't hear metal chatter coming from the engine bay
* Car is sitting still but if I give some gas, I hear it
* If I'm coasting in neutral I don't hear it but as soon as I give some gas, I hear it.

It seems as if the problem is related to accelerator somehow.

Any ideas?

My '03 is making the "coins-in-can" sound and a stethoscope confirms it is coming from the SC, so it is in my garage. I will be contacting Supercharger Technologies tomorrow to order a rebuilt one. Per Hayes manual, it seems to be a weekend job, I just wish the intake manifold didn't have to be removed.

I'm thinking belt tensioner or idler pulley..

Engine clatter

My '04 R53 S just started an intermittent clatter which increases and decreases with RPM and also in loudness. Sometimes its just a flutter and then it increases to a loud clatter. It has 104K miles and I had a 15% pulley put on at 60K. I've been reading threads about SC oil levels and huge expense. Any insights? Might it just be a belt or some other easy remedy.

A month later...it turned out to be a tensioner pulley bearing was going out. SC was fine. Had the water pump replaced at the same time since it had ~ 110K miles on it.

Replaced the SC with a rebuilt unit from Supercharger Technologies. Not an easy job: Had to buy belt tensioner tool. Removing the intake manifold bolts and torquing requires 1/4inch drive swivel. Also, there was some interference between the intake manifold and the SC output duct that required grinding to replace the intake.

No more "coins-in-coffee can" sound and all is good.
