Starter Problem? Clicking after key removed

The battery died in my 2002 MCS.
I charged it, car didnt' start. I haven't load tested the battery yet.
For a little while, after charging the battery, the starter would click when i turned the key, But then, after I turned the key OFF and removed the key from the ignition,
there would be a click-click-click that would continue under the hood for ?a minute, probably less....i never pinpointed where the clicking was coming from. Put the key in and out, didn't change the clicking. It would stop, but then when I tried to start it, the clicking would resume and continue when the key was removed.

happened several times. I recharged the battery, same thing happened.

Now I'm getting NOTHING, no lights, nothing everything is completely dead.

I'm going to load test the battery, probably needs to be replaced.

But what could have caused that clicking when the key was removed?
I'm thinking that my starter contacts were sticking, (not sure why they would do that) and my starter is fried.
What else might cause that?

I will check and replace the battery as needed
If needed I can replace the starter;
but before I do that, what else should I be checking?
and can the starter be rebuilt? (in my Dodge, you can put in a fusible link that will prevent the contacts from sticking, and also beef up the starter contacts..can you do this in a MINI?

the MINI is dead in the water right now...would have to have it towed, and the most reliable shop is way across town....local dealer keeps getting a new service manager or technician, and every time service is supposed to improve, but i'm kinda tired with them
if only it would be as simple as a battery and starter, i'll just do it myself.
thanks

I'm assuming all was well before the battery died? The original BMW batteries are very high quality and last a long time. Mine lasted 8 years. When they fail, they have a tendency to go quickly. During that failure period, all kind of strange things can happen to your car, including sporadic operation of accessories and the like. I would suppose when you get a new battery, everything will properly reset and you'll be motoring again.
