Another radiator fan question
Another radiator fan question
I did spend a few hours trying to track down these specific questions, but alas, I'm probably both dumb and blind because I could not find specific answers. I responded to another thread in '1st Gear', but thought it was more appropriate to post it here. Sorry if people find this annoying.
Is it always the always the case that the radiator fan comes on with the AC? I have never had my fan come on with the AC or AT ALL for that matter.
I've only had the car 2 weeks in the freezing cold here in IL.
Like I stated above, I've also yet to have the fan come on at all without jumping the power connections in the fuse box. I don't know if it's just too cold here to have had it happen yet or if there is a fault further back before the fuse box.
My observations:
1. I've replaced the fan due to it being rusty around the motor and the typical resistor problem was present.
2. The AC button (Auto climate control) does NOT kick on the compressor
3. Both fan relays work if I apply charge across the actuators
4. Both fan speeds engage if I jumper across the correct terminals in the respective relay locations (relay removed)
5. I've inspected all the fuses in the engine compartment and they all appear OK.
6. It looks like I have had the power steering fan rewire upgrade done but where is that fuse now located?
Any constructive comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Do you have a scangauge, or other OBDII device that will tell you the water temp? The fan is supposed to kick in (low) at 221 degrees. It's possible you haven't reached that temp.
If the AC compressor doesn't kick in, that could be the clutch, or possibly the pressure switch.

Per the Bentley manual, and confirmed by my ScanGauge, the fan operates at low speed at 221F, and turns off at 214F. The fan switches to high speed at 234F and remains on high until the coolant temps drops by 7F. Supposedly it also turns on when the AC is on and the AC system pressure reaches 8 bar (114psi)
I don't. Sound like it might be the way to go. Thanks. Any idea where the fuse for the power steering pump fan is?
My ScanGauge II arrived today. Guess what? Spot on! 221 fan finally kicked on, 214ish, off.
It took driving it on the highway for a while then idling for about 5 -8 min. Apparently I'm very impatient!
Thanks for your input Eric.
