Master cylinder? Does the MINI have a slave cylinder? On my '96 Miata, these were symptoms of one or the other going bad. Could you rev it and get it into gear? I could be completely wrong, so I'm really interested to see others' input.

If you turn the car off, can you get it in gear? If so, probably clutch related. If it still won't go in gear, the cables (probably one) went.

Just a guess based on general knowledge, not mini specific.

MINI replaced the shifter box on my MINI for a similair issue. Completely fixed the issue. The shifter box is a complete unit right beneath the shift ****.

Extremely hard to shift gears. Also lost the spring return feel in the neutral position. Had to manually check where the shifter was when shifting around between 1st through 4th gear.
